Set in the midst of Texas hill country, La Cantera is an area of limestone quarrying that happened to be at a major exurban infrastructural node. Over 1,700 acres of old and active quarries straddle I-10 just northwest of San Antonio. Hotel development, theme parks such as Six Flags Fiesta, and extensive retail and housing complexes have reaped extensive economic development benefits for the area. One of the three major golf courses, La Cantera Golf Club, made Golf Digest’s Best New Public Course of the Year in 1995. Conde Nast Traveler magazine named The Westin La Cantera Resort one of the Top 30 North American resorts and Top 50 golf resorts in the U.S. in 2005. The resort sits atop one of the highest points around San Antonio. The unique landscape remains attractive for the housing market, with over 8,000 units in various stages of planning and design.
